What's in a name?
The name Create your Journey Coaching (or CJ Coaching for short) is something that helps me remember my own journey. Many years ago, I realized that I wanted something to remind me to bring lightness and fun into my life--not to get too heavy and take things too seriously. My reminder was a name--Carefree Janette, CJ. When I felt the heaviness creeping in, when I craved ease and fun, I would remind myself of that part of myself, of CJ.
I've had a wonderful journey since then. Read more there
. I've become very clear about where I'm going, where I want to go, and about all the different parts of myself that make up the whole me. I know now that my purpose is in helping people find their own CJs, whoever they may be, and in giving them the support to find all the parts of themselves they need to be the true person they are meant to be.
I'm committed to this purpose and (CJ and) I look forward to being part of your journey!
I've always been a searcher. I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my older brother going through the college catalog page by page, looking for the perfect major for myself. I've had lots of searches since then--the search for the perfect place to live, the perfect mate, the perfect job and career, the perfect employer, the perfect life, the perfect me.
My searches have led to me to a very rich, interesting and stimulating life. After that first search I earned a BA degree in Russian and then 14 years later after another extensive search I received my MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and started a new career at the age of 36. I added a further dimension, my coaching certification (CPC), in my 40s. My studies taught me a lot--both the subject matter and the type of learning I did in these very distinct stages of my life. I learned the difference between learning because I should or because it was expected of me and learning driven by true passion and interest.
I’ve lived abroad in 2 different countries for a total of 17 years. This has given me a sense of adaptability, and an openness, curiosity and appreciation of people in general as well as a great deal of experience with transitions, learning to trust myself and in finding my place no matter where I am geographically.
I worked for years in administrative positions because I could do it well although I always knew I was looking for something else. My organization skills and willingness to support were well suited here and always appreciated by employers. I’ve worked in a variety of business settings ranging from a non-profit to an investment bank. After my career change, I taught language at the university level and extensively in business environments—supporting, encouraging and inspiring people in all different age groups and differing backgrounds. Inspiration is the key word here as it was always the best part of my job--finding ways to truly connect and to help people see their own strengths.
I’ve spent 8 years at a training company where I went from a freelance language consultant position to being the manager of the language department and a member of the management team—using my organization skills and structure to run large projects and my people skills to lead a team effectively. And when it comes to work and career, I also learned the difference between doing something because I should or because it seems to make sense and doing it because it gives me energy and a sense of contribution and purpose.
Through all of this I was still searching…for that perfect thing to make my life and more importantly, me, perfect. Nothing was quite enough and although I was relatively happy, there was most often a faint feeling of discontent. There was something missing and I was searching for the answer.
I would say that I am still searching. But through my own journey of exploration and discovery, my searches have changed. I now realize that nothing is missing and that I have everything I need to live the life I want to live now. My searches now come from a sense of curiosity and the love of growth, discovery and exploration and not with desperation, discontent or a need to fill a hole.
All of the experiences in my life have made me who I am and have given me all that I have to offer in coaching others--strength, support, encouragement, resourcefulness, compassion, inspiration. But it is the shift in my searches that has allowed me to be the true me. I am committed to living my life in this way and to being a traveling companion for others ready to take a journey of their own.
